The annual Heimtextil trade show returned for summer 2022 after a few years hiatus due to the pandemic. The show, despite its smaller scale preview, was back in full force with all of its usual events, parties, talks, and display spaces - including the Trends Space (pictured above). The topic of sustainability in the industry is still the dominant subject along with a current concern: supply chain issues. Both of these subjects were touched on during our first day’s press event. Sustainability is certainly a concerning topic and it’s admirable that the design industry (& Heimtextil) is taking a very responsible approach to it. Included in the press event were the goals toward sustainability (featured on the chart above). Our first visit after attending the press event for Heimtextil, was a guided tour of this year’s Trend Space. Outlined in signage are the requirements to meet the standards for sustainability. For this year’s Trend Space, the theme was Next Horizons with the trends Deep Nature, Hyper Nature, Beyond Identity, & Empowered Identity. Below is a brief highlight on each trend feature. Deep Nature is about reconnecting with the natural world. Hyper Nature is a symphony of immersive realms digitally communicating nature’s secrets and treasures. Beyond Identity is redefining what pastel means. Empowered Identity encourages one to connect with the past and identify with it through craft heritage. All the photos above showcase the immersive trends space. It’s so cool to see all the colors and fabrics, with the opportunity to touch the various textures. The yarns and Pantone colors on display were a fun idea too. Thank you to Messe Frankfurt , Heimtextil, & Gita PR for the opportunity to experience this year’s show! ———————- In addition to the Trends Space featured at Heimtextil 2022, below are some of the other highlights that caught my eye in colors, patterns, and exhibitor displays.
Last week, I was invited to attend a house tour at the iconic 1948 residence of Greta Magnussun-Grossman on behalf of interior designer and furniture designer, Lauren Rottet of Rottet Studio. The iconic mid-century Beverly Hills residence was built in 1948. Thoughtful renovations have seamlessly updated the house for today's modern lifestyle, while staying true to its architectural spirit and restrained scale. The combination of the old and the new, the signature building designed by Grossman and the presentation of some of the stylish furniture pieces from Lauren, made the entire evening an inspirational experience. Grossman was one of the leading figures and few female designers that played an integral role in Los Angeles' modern movement. She was the first female furniture designer who won the Swedish Society of Industrial Design’s Furniture Design award [1]. Her lamp designs for Barker Brothers were among the first lamps applied bullet shaped, directional shades and flexible linkages [2]. These elements are still used in current modern style lamp design. She was also an excellent interior designer and architect, famous for her fourteen projects in Los Angeles. Many of the houses in the projects were built on difficult hillsides that needed stilts and had the size under 1500 feets. Furthermore, she taught courses at UCLA and at the Art Center in Pasadena [3]. Grossman has had an impact in architectural history and it so it was quite fortunate to be able to be hosted by Lauren for a personal home tour! Sitting Nook (the former study of Greta Magnusson-Grossman) One of my favorite rooms when entering the home, is the cozy sitting nook above. Currently, it features the bent metal cocktail table and metal & wood float chair from the Rottet Collection. Above is a landing with impressive views toward Century City. On display is Lauren’s dichroic table made from glass and stainless steel has a geometrical and minimal design. This glass table can reflect light and demonstrate different colors, which makes it a perfect piece for this location. The bedroom also has impressive views seen directly from bed and an elegant and refined rattan settee. The room exhibits the match of mid-century modern style and today’s modern style.
Thank you to Lauren for hosting us for this great tour and evening! I was recently invited by Azenco Outdoor to be a member of a jury to nominate the Best Outdoor Projects of 2020 (soon to be announced on their website), more info here & from their website:
“We called a jury selected in a panel of professional experts with building industry knowledge but not builders themselves, and we submitted them the list of commercial and residential projects and asked them to evaluate each one. Our judges did their homework and, soon, we will be publishing the results and rewarding our best dealers with stunning prizes.” Last month I attended the annual Heimtextil trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany. Heimtextil is the largest show for home and contract textiles and takes place at the third largest convention center in the world. Messe Frankfurt are the organizers of the show and are responsible for over 150 trade shows that take place in the city of Frankfurt yearly. Another major home design show of consumer goods, Ambiente, also took place this past week. Frankfurt just so happens to host two major design shows at the start of each year! My trip last month included a brief visit to this industrial city, along with three days attending the trade fair, and also a very special celebration of the fair’s 50th anniversary. The major focus for this years show was on the ever important topic: sustainability. The trend space area of the fair also addressed five major trends (which I also posted about here), they include:
We were provided with an overview, for each of the trends outlined above, as part of our tour of the trend space on display at Heimtextil. The luxe fabric trends on display. Lots of vibrant color seen for trends! Color and earthy, “local” pattern. Texture and faux textiles. Color and richness. Shiny and glam seen in both fabrics and wall-coverings. The bold colors of “Active Urban”. Cool high performance fabric of the Active Urban display at the trend space. The trend space display was well organized and a highlight of the show. It encompassed trends and what is on the forefront of design in addition to being as very well designed space to engage visitors of the fair. Beyond the trend space, the convention halls are categorized into various sections including art, wallpaper, thematic regions for fabrics, contract fabrics, and window coverings. It’s an extensive show with much to see. During my visit, I took to the wallcovering section of the show. Above are glittery wallpapers in a range of fun colors on display. Across the board, from fabrics to wallpaper, there was a lot of pattern of all varieties - like this from Design ID. Loved the vignette - and again, patterned wallpaper - seen in the Graham and Brown display. There were so many pretty papers at the Ted Baker booth - I really loved them all and are a new favorite! Another very pretty wallpaper from Ted Baker. Art Deco seems to be having a resurgence, now that we are in the 20’s again! I happen to love it! It’s one of my favorite eras in terms of architecture and design - so I was very happy to see this “Deco Gatsby” wallpaper by Ted Baker. I also came across these textured fine Belgian wallcoverings and thought they were quite interesting. The topic of green and sustainability were also seen in the booth displays. While color and pattern were popular trends to see, classics and soft colors still remain. These fabrics from Bartolini Home exude luxurious to me. More from Bartolini Home. I was really impressed with the quality and feel of their fabrics. I also discovered a new (for me) company from Spain, Castilla Textil - that I really loved! Their booth was full of lots of fun, and often, playful and cute patterns. Pattern and a graphic mix on display. They also carry a tablecloth collection. A themed Cuba series from Castilla Textil. Among the many exhibitor halls of Heimtextil. The show is truly the largest textile show with so much more to see than I’ve included here.
Thank you to Messe Frankfurt and Gita PR for hosting us in Frankfurt. A beautiful evening with the most magnificent views: that’s exactly what a visit to the iconic Stahl House with Design Within Reach and Pommery Champagne included. Last week I was fortunate to visit the landmark Case Study House 22 by architect Pierre Koenig. Design Within Reach hosted an event with Pommery Champagne featuring furniture designs made entirely of champagne bottle materials (cork, foil, cage, labels, etc). It was amazing to see the designs - which included replicas of some well known furniture designs and the winners were announced during the event as well! The entrance of the landmark Case Study House greets you with its expansive city views and a pool. Design Within Reach supplied the outdoor lounge furnishings. The house is furnished with cool mid-century modern furnishings from Design Within Reach. While public tours are available to visit the home, private events are currently exclusive to DWR. The living room with its floor to ceiling glass enclosure and beyond is the corner spot of one of famed photographer Julius Shulman most well known photographs (taken from a different angle from the exterior). As the sun was setting, we got to witness the ever changing views from the property. And enjoy food and champagne from Pommery Champagne - with clear skies and a beautiful sunset. All the miniature chair designs were on display to preview before the winners were announced. It was amazing to see the creativity involved - making furniture from champagne bottle materials! A close up of some of the innovative designs. Thank you to Design Within Reach, Pommery Champagne, and the family of the Stahl House for generously hosting us.

In addition, this year the focus is on the topic of sustainability. I’m looking forward to attending and covering the upcoming fair for the very first time and especially excited to be there for the celebration and party for the show’s 50th anniversary! This year’s theme, “WHERE I BELONG” addresses layered identities via the five diverse Heimtextil 20/21 trends. MAXIMUM GLAM turns the glamorous life tech-savvy, PURE SPIRITUAL finds balance in nature and mysticism, ACTIVE URBAN values utilitarian, adaptable solutions, whereas HERITAGE LUX celebrates rich historical legacies and MULTI-LOCAL embraces global cultural influences. This past week I was invited to attend an event at the Getty House hosted by our Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti. The Getty Foundation in conjunction with Engage LA encourages and educates women on opportunities to get involved with city contracting projects. I had the opportunity to meet Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles. The Getty House is also the official residence of the Mayor. It is located in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles. The home was constructed in 1921 of Tudor Revival architecture. The grounds of the home are beautiful. Our event was set up outside at the back of the property. An outdoor seating area that overlooks the water feature. A view from the backyard with a bit of city beyond - looking towards Wilshire Boulevard. The historic home offers some great outdoor seating and entertaining areas. Fun outdoor planters. Beautifully landscaped and shady outdoor seating areas. More of the grounds and rear of the home. A quintessential definition of Los Angeles!
Thank you to the Getty Foundation and Eric Garcetti for hosting us! |
