It’s nice to upgrade your household now and then, but you may find that online recommendations often veer towards the more structural or expensive upgrades to have a lasting impact over smaller choices. Sure, there’s a reason for that. Most interior design experts don’t want to patronize you by just telling you to add more houseplants or make sure the room is lit well - you already know that. But this begs a question - is it possible for me to make real, lasting, notable improvements to my household without necessarily spending thousands for the privilege? Well, we believe you can. While it’s true that small renovations such as adding rooflights in a room with a flat roof can be fantastic for natural light, that’s closer to a more comprehensive upgrade even though it’s relatively inexpensive to implement. So, what cheap, inexpensive, and instant upgrades could provide that kind of value, but without the planning? Let’s consider that below: Layered Decoration Adding depth to a room doesn't mean filling it with expensive pieces, but it can mean curating different tiers of material and visual textures. For instance, a soft throw draped over your sofa, a few cushions in complementary fabrics, perhaps a plant or two at different levels on shelving units, these can all work. Even rearranging what you already own can create new interest when you play with layers and positioning. Symmetry & Balancing Sometimes the simplest fix is just about creating visual balance in a room. Try placing matching lamps on either side of a sofa, or arranging your wall art so it feels like the colours properly flow from one into the next rather than at random. You'd be surprised how much more pulled-together a space feels when things line up pleasingly, even if the items themselves are quite basic. Indulgent Comforts Small luxuries can make your home feel more special without costing much. A scented candle in your entrance hall, some soft lighting around your mirror (it can also give us a confidence boost), or even just organizing your kitchen tea station more thoughtfully ready for your morning matcha can add those little moments of joy throughout your day. Backlit Book Displays Books can be both decorative and functional when displayed well, and of course, sorting through them is an effort most of us put off. But why not do it now? Moreover, adding some simple LED strip lighting behind your shelves creates a warm glow that helps an ordinary bookcase turn into a real feature that draws your eye and convinces you to continue reading. There’s a nice layer of comfort here that can help you feel more learned and keeps your space feeling more cultural. It’s also just a nice way to keep books that might have been gathering dust in the attic or basement. With this advice, we hope you can more easily make those cheap instant upgrades to your household and love your space once again, just as you deserve to.
